Reactivate vs reinstate an MC number

“Reactivate my MC number” can refer to different problems. An inactive USDOT number, revoked operating authority and an application that was never granted need different remedies. Check both the USDOT record and the operating-authority record before selecting a form or paying a fee.

Read both status records

USDOT registration identifies the company and its operations. Operating authority addresses the authority required for particular regulated operations. One record can need attention even when the other appears active. Read the agency notice alongside both records to identify the actual issue.

Inactive USDOT registration

FMCSA directs companies reactivating an inactive USDOT number to complete the appropriate MCS-150 series form. Confirm which form applies to your operation and follow the current agency instructions. A separate out-of-service order can require additional corrective work beyond updating registration.

Revoked MC operating authority

Reinstatement applies to previously granted authority that has been revoked. Resolve the reason for the revocation, review prerequisites and use the applicable reinstatement process. The $80 FMCSA reinstatement fee is separate from any private preparation service fee.

Authority that was never granted

A pending or dismissed application is not necessarily a reinstatement case. Review the application history and current agency instructions. Starting a new application to avoid an existing compliance problem can leave the original issue unresolved; identify the correct entity and filing path first.
