Why it matters

Who needs the MCS-150 update

Form MCS-150, the Motor Carrier Identification Report, keeps your USDOT record current: legal name and address, operation type, fleet size, drivers, mileage and cargo. Under 49 CFR 390.19T, every USDOT number holder updates it every 24 months, even when nothing has changed. A missed biennial update can lead to civil penalties and deactivation of the USDOT number (49 CFR 390.19T(b)(4)). FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement and USDOT inactivation for biennial updates due on or after June 1, 2026; the update is still required.

Your due month is set by your USDOT number. Every USDOT number holder updates its MCS-150 every 24 months. The last digit of the USDOT number sets the month (1 = January through 9 = September, 0 = October), the next-to-last digit sets the year (odd digit, odd-numbered years; even digit, even-numbered years), and the update is due by the last day of that month (49 CFR 390.19T). Look yours up with the MCS-150 due date checker.

What the MCS-150 is

  • A biennial update of your USDOT registration, separate from UCR, BOC-3 and operating authority.
  • Free to file with FMCSA: there is no government fee.
  • MCS-150 updates are made in FMCSA's Motus registration system, which replaced FMCSA's legacy registration systems in May 2026; you sign in with Login.gov and link your USDOT number. FMCSA controls processing in Motus, and timing can vary while the transition continues.

How it works

How the MCS-150 update works.

  1. 01

    You enter your USDOT number

    Online form

Your due month comes from the last digit of your USDOT number, and the next-to-last digit sets the even or odd year. The order form walks through the fields Form MCS-150 collects: operation classification, vehicle counts by type, annual mileage and mileage year, driver counts and hazmat status.

  2. 02

You pick one update or lifetime and pay

    $175 / $400

$175 for one biennial update or $400 once for lifetime updates, plus a $25 add-on only if you choose PIN recovery or Login.gov setup help. FMCSA charges nothing for the MCS-150. See the price table.

  3. 03

    Prepared, then submitted in Motus

    Motus

We prepare your MCS-150 update; it is submitted to FMCSA in Motus by you or a filer you authorize. FMCSA controls when the update shows in its records, and your confirmation is emailed to you and saved to your Compliance Vault.

  4. 04

Your record stays current for the cycle

    Every 24 months

The next update is due 24 months later, in the same month. Filing early or off-cycle (for an address or fleet change) does not move your schedule: it stays fixed by your USDOT number.

Questions

MCS-150, answered.

When is my MCS-150 due?

Every USDOT number holder updates its MCS-150 every 24 months. The last digit of the USDOT number sets the month (1 = January through 9 = September, 0 = October), the next-to-last digit sets the year (odd digit, odd-numbered years; even digit, even-numbered years), and the update is due by the last day of that month (49 CFR 390.19T).

Who needs to file the MCS-150?

Every motor carrier, freight broker and freight forwarder with a USDOT number updates the MCS-150 every 24 months, whatever the fleet size, including single-truck owner-operators. Carriers that need a Hazardous Materials Safety Permit file the MCS-150B instead.

How much does an MCS-150 update cost?

FMCSA charges no fee for the MCS-150. Through Fast Trucking Compliance it is $175 for one biennial update or $400 once for lifetime updates, plus a $25 add-on only if you choose PIN recovery or Login.gov setup help. Each amount is itemized before you pay.

Can I file the MCS-150 myself?

Yes. You can file the MCS-150 yourself for free in FMCSA's Motus system at motus.dot.gov, signing in with Login.gov. A service is for carriers who want the form prepared for them.

What happens if I miss my MCS-150 update?

A missed biennial update can lead to civil penalties and deactivation of the USDOT number (49 CFR 390.19T(b)(4)). FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement and USDOT inactivation for biennial updates due on or after June 1, 2026; the update is still required. Filing the update is how the record is brought current.

Do I still need a USDOT PIN?

No. FMCSA no longer uses a USDOT PIN for the MCS-150. MCS-150 updates are made in FMCSA's Motus registration system, which replaced FMCSA's legacy registration systems in May 2026; you sign in with Login.gov and link your USDOT number. FMCSA controls processing in Motus, and timing can vary while the transition continues.

Can I get a refund?

Our service fee follows the Fast Trucking Compliance Refund Policy, including its re-filing guarantee: if a filing is rejected because of an error on our part, it is re-filed at no additional cost.
