What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is a federally-assigned identifier for every motor carrier operating commercial vehicles in interstate commerce (and in some intrastate contexts). It's issued by the FMCSA and stays with the carrier for life. If you're looking at a DOT placard on the side of a truck, the 7-digit number is the USDOT.

How do I find a carrier's USDOT number?

The easiest way is the placard on the truck - every commercial motor carrier has to display their USDOT number on both sides of the vehicle. You can also search FMCSA's SAFER system by carrier name, or if you only have an MC docket number, use our MC lookup tool to reverse-find the USDOT.

What's the difference between USDOT and MC number?

USDOT is a safety-tracking identifier for every motor carrier. MC (Motor Carrier) docket is a separate number issued only to for-hire carriers that need operating authority. A private carrier (hauling their own freight) has a USDOT but no MC. A for-hire carrier has both. The MC number takes 3–6 weeks to get after USDOT registration.

Why does a USDOT come back "Not Authorized"?

Most commonly because the carrier filed for operating authority (MC) but hasn't cleared FMCSA's processing yet (FMCSA lists 20-25 business days for new applicants), or because their insurance or BOC-3 isn't on file. "Not Authorized" doesn't mean the USDOT is bad - it means the carrier doesn't have active interstate operating authority. If you're the carrier, we can help you get authority activated.

Does FMCSA charge for USDOT lookups?

No. The SAFER system is free and public, and our tool wraps the same data. We make our money on paid filings (BOC-3, UCR, MC authority, etc.), not on lookups.
