A USDOT number is a federally-assigned identifier for every motor carrier operating commercial vehicles in interstate commerce (and in some intrastate contexts). It's issued by the FMCSA and stays with the carrier for life. If you're looking at a DOT placard on the side of a truck, the 7-digit number is the USDOT.
