What is an MC number?
A motor carrier docket number issued by FMCSA for for-hire interstate operating authority.
How long does it take to get MC authority?

Do I need to file Form 2290 if I just bought a truck?
Yes - Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month following first use if the truck is 55,000 lbs+.
What is UCR registration?
Annual Unified Carrier Registration fee for interstate carriers under 49 CFR Part 367.
Who needs to file MCS-150?
Every active USDOT registrant - biennially, per a schedule based on the USDOT number.
What happens if I miss my MCS-150 deadline?
USDOT is deactivated; civil penalties up to $1,584/day (max $15,846) apply until you re-file.
Do I need a process agent in every state?
Yes - but a single blanket BOC-3 designation covers all 50 states + DC.
Is ELDT required for existing CDL drivers?
No - ELDT applies only to new CDL applicants and certain endorsement upgrades.
What is the FMCSA Clearinghouse?
A federal database of CDL drug & alcohol testing violations under 49 CFR Part 382.
Do brokers need a USDOT number?
No - pure brokers need only an MC broker docket. Carriers and broker-carriers need both.
Do I need an MC number for intrastate operations?
No - MC numbers are FMCSA federal authority for interstate. Intrastate-only operates under state authority.
What is the difference between MC and MX numbers?
MC is the standard FMCSA docket for U.S. carriers; MX is for Mexico-domiciled carriers operating in the U.S.
How long does FMCSA vetting take?
FMCSA lists 20-25 business days of processing for new applicants. The window is fixed regardless of fee - there is no expedite path.
Do brokers need BIPD insurance?
No - brokers file BMC-84 surety bond or BMC-85 trust fund instead. BIPD is for motor carriers only.
How much does it cost to start a trucking company?

What is the difference between IRP and IFTA?
IRP apportions vehicle registration across states; IFTA apportions fuel tax. Both required for interstate carriers crossing 2+ jurisdictions.
How do I add a truck to my IRP apportioned plate?
Through your base-state IRP office - supplement application with vehicle weight, VIN, and supporting docs. Plate updates within 1–3 business days.
Do I need a DOT physical every year?
Most CDL drivers need it every 2 years. Drivers with managed conditions (hypertension, diabetes) may need annual or shorter cards.
Do I need ELDT if I already have a CDL?
No - ELDT only applies to new CDL applicants, upgrades (Class B → A), and certain endorsement adds (passenger, school bus, hazmat).
How do I find my USDOT number?
Search SAFER (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov) by company name or DOT number. Active carriers display their USDOT, MC, and operation type.
How do I fix a mistake on Form 2290?
File a corrected return (Form 2290 marked Amended Return) and a refund claim on Form 8849 Schedule 6 if you over-paid.
How do I get out of the new-entrant program?
Pass the FMCSA new-entrant safety audit (typically months 8–12). Keep CSA scores under thresholds and DQ files complete.
How do I pull an MVR on myself?
Order through your state DMV (driver record request). Carriers must run MVRs annually under §391.25 plus at hire under §391.23.
How much BIPD insurance do I need?
Minimum $750K for general freight; $1M for hazmat in containers; $5M for hazmat bulk. Set in 49 CFR §387.
Is BMC-91 the same as BIPD?
No - BMC-91 is the FMCSA insurance filing form. BIPD (Bodily Injury & Property Damage) is the type of coverage that BMC-91 evidences.
What disqualifies a driver from getting a CDL?
Major offenses (DUI, leaving accident scene, felonies in CMV), drug & alcohol violations, and serious traffic violations under §383.51.
What is a CSA score and how do I improve it?
