Compliance FAQ
What happens if I file MCS-150 late?
A missed biennial update can lead to civil penalties and deactivation of the USDOT number (49 CFR 390.19T(b)(4)). FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement and USDOT inactivation for biennial updates due on or after June 1, 2026; the update is still required. File the overdue update through Motus as soon as possible. FMCSA controls when the update shows in its records.

Why does it matter?
The biennial update is due by the last day of the carrier's filing month, set by the last digit of the USDOT number (the next-to-last digit sets odd or even years). A missed biennial update can lead to civil penalties and deactivation of the USDOT number (49 CFR 390.19T(b)(4)). FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement and USDOT inactivation for biennial updates due on or after June 1, 2026; the update is still required.
If the USDOT number is deactivated, it shows as inactive in FMCSA's records. A carrier with a deactivated USDOT number can't operate until the update is filed.
To bring the record current, file a fresh MCS-150 through Motus. There is no FMCSA fee to file it. FMCSA controls when the update shows in its records.
Other registrations - UCR, IRP, insurance filings - are separate from the MCS-150 and have their own requirements. Filing the MCS-150 does not update them.
