Insurance Grace Period

Also known as: 30-Day Insurance Grace Period, Cancellation Grace Window

By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team

Definition

The insurance grace period is the window of roughly 30 days between an insurer’s cancellation filing and FMCSA’s revocation of the authority for the lapse. When an insurer cancels a carrier’s BMC-91 or BMC-91X coverage, it files the cancellation with FMCSA. If replacement coverage is filed before the window closes, the authority stays active. If not, the authority is revoked and has to be reinstated after insurance is back on record, which means curing the cause, paying the FMCSA reinstatement fee and waiting for FMCSA’s review. That is why an insurance cancellation notice needs attention before the window closes.
