Compliance FAQ
How much does a USDOT number cost?
A USDOT number itself is free under 49 CFR §390. The cost of getting fully compliant - adding MC authority ($300 per type), BOC-3 (~$75), UCR (tier-based, ~$46–$59 entry-level), and a BMC-91 insurance filing - typically lands between $1,500 and $4,500 for a one-truck operation in year one.
Why it matters
FMCSA registration is free. The fee that does exist is the $300-per-type MC operating authority charge, which only for-hire interstate carriers pay. Private carriers hauling their own goods skip MC authority entirely and just use the free USDOT.
Real first-year cost is dominated by insurance - most owner-operators pay $9,000–$14,000 in primary liability premium even before you count the $750,000 BMC-91 filing the insurer has to file with FMCSA. Skip that calculus and you'll under-budget and run out of cash before your first dispatched load.
