Compliance FAQ
What is an MC number?
An MC number is a motor-carrier docket number issued by FMCSA under 49 USC §13902. It identifies a carrier that has been granted operating authority to transport regulated property or passengers in for-hire interstate commerce. It is separate from your USDOT number, which every carrier needs.
Why it matters
MC stands for “motor carrier.” The number is technically a docket number - FMCSA tracks each authorized carrier's file by it. You see MC-, FF-, and MX- prefixes on different docket types: MC for property/passenger carriers and brokers, FF for freight forwarders, MX for Mexican-domiciled carriers.
For-hire general freight haulers crossing state lines need both USDOT and MC. Private carriers (hauling only their own goods) need just USDOT. Pure brokers need only an MC broker docket - no USDOT required for the brokerage itself.
