Compliance FAQ

Do I need to file Form 2290 if I just bought a truck?

Yes - if the truck has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more. The IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) is due by the last day of the month following the month you first used the truck on a public highway. A truck bought and first-used in March is due by April 30.

Why it matters

HVUT is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax authorized under 26 USC §4481. The annual tax year runs July 1 through June 30. If you bought a truck mid-year, you owe a prorated amount based on first-use month - not the full $550 annual.

The stamped Schedule 1 the IRS returns is your proof of payment. Most states will not renew or issue an IRP plate without it. E-filing returns the stamped Schedule 1 the same day; paper returns can take weeks.
