Compliance FAQ
How long does it take to get MC authority?
FMCSA lists 20-25 business days of processing for new applicants (longer if the application is selected for further review). After FMCSA publishes the application in the FMCSA Register there is a 10-day protest period during which any party can object (49 CFR 365.203T). Your MC authority flips from PENDING to ACTIVE only after processing completes AND your BOC-3 process-agent designation plus BMC-91 insurance proof are both on file - both are due within 20 days of the Register notice (49 CFR 365.109T).
Why it matters
FMCSA's 20-25 business-day processing estimate is not something you can expedite. What you can control is whether your BOC-3 and BMC-91 are submitted promptly so authority activates as soon as processing completes instead of weeks later.
Common delays: insurance binding, BMC-91 filer error, or a BOC-3 process agent that hasn't completed your blanket designation. Watch L&I (FMCSA Licensing & Insurance) for the “Authority Granted” effective date to confirm your activation.
