Voluntary Revocation

Also known as: Voluntary Surrender, Self-Revocation

By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team

Definition

Voluntary revocation is the cancellation of operating authority at the carrier’s own request. Carriers usually ask for it because they stopped operating, sold the business or no longer wanted to carry the required insurance. Because the authority was surrendered on purpose, getting it back generally means a new operating-authority application, with the $300 FMCSA fee per authority type, the new-applicant review and the 10-day protest period, rather than a reinstatement. Knowing whether authority was voluntarily surrendered or involuntarily revoked determines which path, and which FMCSA fee, applies.
