USDOT Deactivation

Also known as: Deactivation, Inactive USDOT

By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team

Definition

USDOT deactivation is the inactive status FMCSA can apply to a USDOT number, including when a carrier does not file its required MCS-150 biennial update. A missed biennial update can lead to civil penalties and deactivation of the USDOT number (49 CFR 390.19T(b)(4)). A deactivated USDOT shows as inactive in FMCSA’s public records, and the carrier cannot operate on it until the update is filed. Deactivation for a missed update is an administrative lapse addressed by filing the overdue MCS-150, distinct from revocation of authority. FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement and USDOT inactivation for biennial updates due on or after June 1, 2026; the update is still required.
