Operation Classification

Also known as: Operation Type, Carrier Operation

By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team

Definition

Operation classification is the set of categories on the MCS-150 that describe how a carrier operates. The form asks whether the carrier runs interstate or intrastate and whether it is an authorized for-hire carrier, exempt for-hire carrier, private carrier of property or passengers, or another listed type. FMCSA uses the classification to apply the right safety and authority rules. A change in how the business operates - for example switching from private to for-hire - is a reportable change that should be reflected on the MCS-150 within 30 days under FMCSA registration guidance, not held until the next biennial update.
