BMC-84

Also known as: Property Broker Surety Bond, Broker Bond

By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team

Definition

BMC-84 is the FMCSA form a surety company files to show that a property or household-goods broker holds the $75,000 surety bond required under 49 USC §13906. The bond protects motor carriers and shippers if the broker fails to pay. Broker authority is not granted until the financial-security filing is on record, and under 49 CFR §365.109T it is due within 20 days of the application notice publishing in the FMCSA Register. The alternative to the bond is a BMC-85 trust fund for the same amount. A broker that also operates trucks needs separate motor-carrier authority and insurance.
