What changed
During the transition to Motus, FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement of biennial updates and USDOT inactivation; registrants whose update was due on or after June 1, 2026 will receive additional time to complete it. The update is still required, and FMCSA says it will share additional guidance as Motus recovery and stabilization efforts continue. 49 CFR 390.19T still requires the biennial update; only enforcement and USDOT inactivation are paused for updates due on or after June 1, 2026.
The MCS-150 due date itself is derived from the carrier's USDOT number (the last digit sets the month and the second-to-last digit sets odd or even years). Once a USDOT number is deactivated, the carrier can't operate under it until the update is filed.
Why this matters
For carriers tracking deadlines manually or relying on FMCSA email reminders, the pause is temporary and the update is still required, so keep filing on schedule. Recovery means filing the missing MCS-150 update: 49 CFR 390.19T(b)(4) provides for USDOT deactivation, and FMCSA's reactivation guidance is to submit a new MCS-150.
A reminder set well before the due date is the simplest way to avoid a missed update. Carriers should keep tracking their due date during the pause, because the update remains required.
How to recover from a deactivation
If your USDOT number shows as inactive for a missed update, file the missing MCS-150 in FMCSA's Motus system or through FastMCS150Filing; filing the update reactivates the USDOT number.
