HHG Authority

Also known as: Household Goods Authority, HHG Carrier

By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team

Definition

HHG authority is FMCSA operating authority to transport household goods (residential moves) for hire across state lines. It is applied for on the same operating-authority application with the household-goods designation checked, and carries the same $300 FMCSA fee and BOC-3 requirement. It is a distinct classification from general-freight authority: HHG carriers operate under the 49 CFR Part 375 consumer-protection rules (written estimates, the "Your Rights and Responsibilities" pamphlet, inventories, weight tickets and a dispute-settlement program) and must keep a cargo-insurance filing (BMC-34) that general-freight carriers no longer need. HHG brokers need a BOC-3 as well.

Operating Authority for HHG Movers

Household goods (HHG) authority is separate from regular property authority. HHG carriers need BMC-91/91X liability insurance filings plus cargo security under 49 CFR 387.303(c); HHG brokers post the $75,000 BMC-84 bond.
