Hazardous Materials

Also known as: Hazmat, HM

By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team

Definition

Hazardous materials are substances regulated under 49 CFR Parts 100–185 because they pose a risk in transportation. On the MCS-150, a carrier reports whether it hauls hazmat and which hazmat cargo classifications apply. Carriers that need an FMCSA Hazardous Materials Safety Permit file the MCS-150B, the combined identification report and permit application, instead of the plain MCS-150, on the same biennial schedule. Hazmat status feeds FMCSA’s safety-permit and monitoring systems and is one of the data points brokers and shippers verify. Hazmat training (HM-126F) and PHMSA registration are separate obligations.
