EIN

Also known as: FEIN, Employer Identification Number, Tax ID

Definition

An EIN is the IRS-issued Employer Identification Number a business uses for federal tax purposes. FMCSA ties a carrier’s USDOT record to its EIN (or, for some sole proprietors, a Social Security number), and the number is part of the identifying data on the MCS-150. The same EIN appears on the IRS Form 2290 return for heavy vehicles. Keeping the EIN consistent across the MCS-150, operating authority and tax filings prevents mismatches that can stall registration actions, and a new EIN usually signals a new legal entity rather than a simple update.
