Carrier Name Change
Also known as: Legal Name Change, DBA Change, Name Change

Definition
A carrier name change is a change to a carrier’s legal business name or DBA, which must be reflected on the MCS-150 within 30 days under FMCSA registration guidance. A rename of the same legal entity is an update to the existing registration, and the USDOT number stays the same. If the underlying legal entity changed - a new LLC, a sale or a change in ownership structure - FMCSA may require a new registration instead. Companion filings follow the name: the BOC-3 and the insurer’s BMC-91 filing should match the new name, and UCR and IRP records need it too. Brokers and factoring companies match the name against the carrier’s public FMCSA record.
