Compliance FAQ

Can I reactivate my USDOT after deactivation?

Yes. For a deactivation caused by a missed MCS-150, reactivation starts with filing a fresh, complete MCS-150 through Motus (motus.dot.gov). FMCSA controls when the update shows in its records.

Why does it matter?

The carrier signs in to Motus with Login.gov (with its USDOT number linked to the account), or has a filing service prepare the update, and files a fresh MCS-150 with current carrier data. FMCSA controls when the update shows in its records.

FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement and USDOT inactivation for biennial updates due on or after June 1, 2026; the update is still required.

An MCS-150 only addresses a deactivation caused by a missed update. If operating authority was revoked for another reason, such as an insurance or BOC-3 lapse, that underlying cause has to be fixed and a separate reinstatement is required.

If you are unsure why the record is inactive, look it up in FMCSA's Motus public search by USDOT number or company name, or contact FMCSA before filing.
