Yard Move

Definition

Yard move is a special driving category under 49 CFR §395.28(a)(1)(ii) that a carrier can enable on its ELDs for moving a CMV inside a yard, terminal or other private property. Under FMCSA's ELD guidance it is recorded as on-duty not driving, so it does not count toward the 11-hour driving limit, but it does count toward the 14-hour window and the 60/70-hour limit. The carrier must enable yard-move authorization in the ELD configuration; the driver selects yard-move on the ELD before starting the move. The status reverts to driving automatically once the truck exceeds the configured speed threshold (typically 20 mph) or leaves the geofenced yard. Yard-move misuse - selecting it for over-the-road movement - is a high-severity violation flagged during roadside inspections.
