Last-Digit Filing-Month Rule
Also known as: Last Digit Month Rule, USDOT Last Digit
By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team
Definition
The last-digit filing-month rule sets the month a carrier’s MCS-150 biennial update is due, from the last digit of the USDOT number. The mapping is 1 = January, 2 = February, 3 = March, 4 = April, 5 = May, 6 = June, 7 = July, 8 = August, 9 = September and 0 = October (49 CFR 390.19T). The update is due by the last day of that month. November and December are never filing months under the rule. Pair it with the next-to-last-digit rule to find the year: USDOT 12345 is due by May 31 in even-numbered years.
