49 CFR Part 390

Also known as: Part 390, FMCSR General Applicability

By Korey Sharp-Paar · Reviewed by the Fast Trucking Compliance team

Definition

49 CFR Part 390 is the part of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations that sets general applicability, definitions and the Motor Carrier Identification Report requirement. Section 390.19T sets out who must file the MCS-150 and the 24-month biennial update, and section 390.21T covers marking vehicles with the USDOT number. FMCSA registration guidance adds a 30-day window for reporting changes such as a new legal name or address. Part 390 is the legal basis for the MCS-150 and for the civil penalties and USDOT deactivation that can follow when a carrier does not keep its record current (49 CFR 390.19T(b)(4)).
