IRS Form 2290 Deadline Reminder: August 31 for FY 2026 HVUT

IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax filing deadline for the 2026 tax year (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027) is August 31, 2026.

The deadline

The IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) under 26 USC §4481 covers commercial trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more. The 2026 tax year runs from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. The annual filing - IRS Form 2290 - is due by August 31, 2026 for any vehicle in service on July 1.

Trucks first used after July are due by the last day of the month following the first-use month. A truck first used on August 14, 2026 is due by September 30; one first used on December 5, 2026 is due by January 31, 2027.

Why this matters

The stamped Schedule 1 the IRS returns is your proof of HVUT payment. Most states will not renew or issue an IRP apportioned plate without it. If you let the August 31 deadline lapse, you risk an IRP renewal hold - even if your IRP base state has a different fiscal year - until the IRS receipt is in hand.

The IRS assesses penalties on late 2290 filings: 4.5% of unpaid tax for each month or partial month late, plus monthly interest. The base annual HVUT for a 75,000+ lb truck is $550, so a 12-month late filing accumulates to roughly $830 - meaningful for fleet operators with multiple trucks.

E-file vs paper

E-filing is mandatory for fleets of 25 or more vehicles under IRS regulation. Smaller fleets and owner-operators may e-file or paper file - but e-filing returns the stamped Schedule 1 the same day the return is processed; paper filings can take 4–6 weeks.

Most carriers use an IRS-authorized e-file provider rather than filing directly. Provider fees typically run $30–$70 for a single-truck filing. Compared to the cost of a 4-week wait for the Schedule 1 (and potential IRP plate renewal delays), the fee is well worth it.

What to do next

Add the August 31 deadline to your annual compliance calendar. A bookkeeper or compliance vendor should be filing this for you in late July to early August - not waiting until the last week.

If you bought a truck mid-year, file within the first-use deadline. Don't conflate it with the August 31 annual.

Keep the stamped Schedule 1 in your truck's glove box. Roadside inspectors occasionally ask for it; IRP renewal officers always do.
