Compliance FAQ
Can I haul oversize on state roads without a permit?
No. State DOT regulations prohibit operating an oversize or overweight load on any state-maintained roads without a current oversize/overweight permit. The state agency enforces the requirement at weigh stations and during roadside inspections.

Why does it matter?
The state DOT regulatory framework treats oversize/overweight movement as a privilege contingent on permit issuance - every state requires the carrier to obtain a permit before moving any load that exceeds standard size or weight limits. Operating without a permit is a strict-liability violation; the carrier cannot defend by claiming the load configuration was below the threshold (the load is measured at inspection) or that the carrier didn't know permits were required.
For inspections, state troopers use weight stations as primary checkpoints. Most weight stations have on-duty enforcement that checks for current oversize/overweight permits when scaling vehicles. Random roadside inspections also check permits.
