15,357 new USDOT registrations in May 2026

FMCSA cut carrier registration over to its new Motus system in May 2026, and the agency's data-publishing cadence shifted with it. Through the cutover month, 15,357 new USDOT numbers were issued to carriers domiciled in the 50 states and DC (−7.1% vs. the prior month, +4.2% vs. May 2025). 8,060of those were interstate carriers - the subset comparable to "new carrier authority" figures from Motive or FTR. Updated monthly from the public FMCSA Company Census File; every number on this page is free to cite or republish.

Every state, every month

Each state page carries the 24-month trend, top registration cities, fleet-size mix, interstate-only counts, and a CSV download.

Methodology

Source: FMCSA Company Census File (dataset az4n-8mr2 on data.transportation.gov). We run server-side SoQL aggregations against the Socrata SODA API - a count of census records grouped by the month of add_date (the date FMCSA added the record) and phy_state(the carrier's physical-address state). Interstate-only counts filter to carrier_operation = 'A'. Snapshot taken ; FMCSA last updated the underlying file .

Caveats. These are new USDOT registrations by add date - they include intrastate carriers, private (own-goods) fleets, and other non-for-hire entities. They are not "new operating authorities" (MC numbers), so the headline count runs higher than new-authority figures published by Motive, FTR, or FMCSA's authority grants. Use the interstate-only column (carrier_operation = 'A') to reconcile against those series. Counts are by the carrier's physical address, not where it operates. Revocations and deactivations are not netted out - this measures gross new entrants, not net fleet growth. Carriers domiciled in US territories, Canada, and Mexico are excluded from the national total. FMCSA's May 2026 Motus cutover changed the registration pipeline; if the agency pauses or restates the census file, our refresh job fails loudly rather than publishing stale numbers - the changelog below records every publish.
